Wherever Stone travelled he was attracted to photographing the local church, as it would of course provide wonderful subject matter, from both an architectural and historical point of view. St Mary's would have been a familiar place to him as his brother James' family worshipped there, as did many of their circle of friends and acquaitances. This photograph was taken before the rebuilding work in 1876/78.
On one of his visits to St Mary's he also photographed the Rectory, which lay between the Church and the lake, thus preserving for posterity a building long since demolished.
